Connect 3G Phone Data (Internet) on Laptop like Wifi

Wires are a big hassle and mobility is today’s demand. Most of us are using internet on phone but when we need to use it on laptop then we find no clue of sharing phone’s internet connection with our laptop.

Do you know that you Can make a personal HotSpot (wifi) with 3G/4G

Although it’s very simple and is called Tethering. Let me tell you how to do it on an Android device. Although there are many versions of androids are available but they all have more or less same settings for tethering.

There are 2 ways by which you can use 3G/4G data on your laptop

1) Via USB Cable (It works like a wired LAN)
2) Via making mobile a hotspot. (Like your home/office Wifi)image

Go go Android Mobile’s Settings >> Wireless and Networks

Click Tethering & Portable Hotspot.

Once you are there

Check Portable Wifi HotSpot and this will enable your packet data (3G/4G) which is available on your mobile to be used over Wifi

Sometimes this is called MobileAP and MobileAP settings.

What about Wifi HotSpot settings? (Security Key etc.)

In the above image the third option is Portable Wifi hotspot Settings.  Click it and now you can configure the security key.

You can define your own SSID (Name which you will see on your laptop to connect your phone ) and Security (By default it’s open which means it can be used by anyone without any key). If you like you can change it to WEP or something like that and define the key. This key will be your security key which will be asked while you connect a laptop to this hotspot.

That was easy!! But there are some precautions too.

Precautions and Guidelines of using portable wifi hotspot

In this hotspot configuration, mobile consumes lot of battery. So make sure that you have necessary battery power to use it and switch it off (hotspot) when your work is done.

This configuration will heat-up your mobile a little bit more than usual, so don’t keep mobile in your pocket while hotspot is enabled.

If you are not getting 3G/4G speed but 2G!!

This happens sometimes. Make sure you have proper data package and 3G/4G is enabled on your mobile.

Go to Settings >> Wireless & Networks >> Mobile Networks

Now make sure of two things: One is Mobile data is ON (checked) and the other is Network is WCDMA or 3G or 4G depending on your network. But it should not be GSM. GSM provides 2G only.

Will My Phone Work in Other Country – 3 Step Check

If you are planning to go abroad but not sure whether your phone will work there then read along.

It’s a big trouble to find whether my phone will work in another country or not. If you travel often then it’s not a good idea that you keep on buying new phones which work in that country. A little drilling will help you to find whether your nokia, samsung, motorola or nexus phone will work in another country or you need to buy a new phone.

Don't buy new mobile if going in another country

Understand Mobile Technologies

Basically there are only two bands GSM and CDMA. GSM is the oldest band and CDMA is relatively new technology. In whatever country you go, you will these two mobile technologies.

Although some of them are using HSDPA which is 3G network. Don’t bother about that. Focus on GSM/CDMA at this point of time.

So, How can someone check which country mobile carrier is using which technology? The answer is simple search google by typing this “Wikipedia Mobile Network Operator of COUNTRY_NAME”. For example if you like to know the status of mobile carriers for Italy then type “wikipedia mobile network operator of italy” this will give you this list: Italy. Similarly you can find the status of China, Australia etc here

That’s not all. If you have found out that mobile operators are using GSM or CDMA or any other network there is one more thing you need to look upon.

Check Frequency Band of that Operator (Country Specific)

Some mobile operates on 900/1800 MHz and some on 850/1900. This info is also present on the previous search we made to find the GSM/CDMA status. Just check the frequency band and remember it for a while because we are going to do the last step.

Check Your Mobile Status (Band and Technology)

Most of you must be aware about whether you are using GSM network or CDMA network but checking frequency band is what we need to check. Go to any good mobile site and check which network your mobile support. For this type in google your mobile name and version along with word “specification”. This will lead you to websites like gsmarena which review almost all mobile phones in the world. For Example if you like to know about samsung galaxy s4 then type “Samsung Galaxy S4 Specification“.

If everything is matching like your mobile supports GSM or CDMA and frequency band too then congratulations you won’t need to buy a new phone while going into a new country.

There is one more thing to note that your phone should be unlocked. Means it should allow you to change SIM cards. There are some mobile providers which bundle your phone with their sim card. Such phones doesn’t accept other sim cards.

Hope this could help you and cut your travelling expenses. Happy Journey
